  Don’t Hate on 8 (Infographic)

  In the last two months, fierce debates surrounding Windows 8 have taken place all over the web. While I haven’t tried out the consumer preview, I did get the chance to see it in action and it left me intrigued. To put it simply: the new operating system seems like a bold move for Microsoft. Modeled after today’s wildly successful smartphones, Windows 8 could prove to be a real gambit in the PC world.

  We’ve put together an infographic that breaks down the improvements and new features on 8. I’m hardly a computer wiz, but reading up on Windows 8’s apps and cloud software sure makes me wonder how Microsoft’s big release will fare against Apple. Check out the graphic below and let us know if you think Windows 8 can gain some ground against Apple’s OSX!

  Call Your Mother (Infographic)

  Since Mother’s Day is coming up, I thought it would be nice to pay tribute to all the mothers out there and all the things they do for their kids. This graphic takes a playful look at some of the sacrifices average moms make in the interest of their children—for example, a new mom typically loses about three hours of sleep per night when they have a newborn. It also discusses other things we might not as readily thing of, like how many peanut butter and jelly sandwiches your mother may have made you by the time you reached high school (around 1,500).

  Each mom is unique, but more often than not, our mothers have done more for us than we readily realize. I hope you enjoy this graphic, and that it inspires you to show some appreciation to your mom this Mother’s Day.

  The Virtual Wars: How Hacktivism Finally Became a Powerful Virtual Weapon

  Hacking might not be something you think of very often in terms of major conflicts. The Internet has been around for a relatively small portion of history, but today it represents a serious battleground for many different kinds of conflict, from the petty to the monumental.

  This infographic takes a look at how hacking has become a weapon in many kinds of conflict. From governments gathering information on people they perceive as in opposition all the way to types of political speech, hacking and “hacktivism,” are on the rise.

  I found it especially interesting that most hackers are located in the United States—66% of them, in fact. It’s becoming such a common thing that I feel like everyone should be aware of it—and aware that it’s a weapon wielded by governments and parties on all sides of conflict. Hacking has evolved far beyond online thieves and fraud: these days it’s a much more complex and versatile thing.

  The People’s Tech Revolution (Infographic)

  While I always encourage caution in regard to investing in the latest and greatest technology at the drop of the hat, I do think it’s important to try and keep an idea of how technology is impacting the world, and it’s not always a bad thing to realize you’re due for an upgrade and finally take the plunge to invest in something more current if you feel you’ll make good use of it.

  I don’t think anyone could have predicted that smartphones would end up playing a major role in journalistic coverage or revolutions worldwide—but as this infographic shows, they have. I feel like you can see how smartphones are beginning to represent in one device abilities we used to have to spend money on an array of different electronics to achieve. They can be a camera, a web browser, a social media hub, and, of course, a phone.

  This infographic lays out how smartphones are overtaking many point-and-shoot cameras in popularity: for example, the iPhone has surpassed the Canon Powershot (a camera I have) in upload popularity on Flickr. It also examines the tension between “citizen journalism” and traditional photojournalism. While that’s a very new issue, I think it is well worth considering. It’s my hope that citizen journalists with smartphones can become a driving support to photojournalism, and that the proliferation of media from ordinary people will help keep the world at large more informed and aware.

  The Wild, Wild Web: Wrestling Online Privacy

  Last week we debuted an infographic on the SOPA blackout, showing how the internet has become a powerful tool for activism. But the spread of social media also has its risks. Those same sites that we use to connect to family, friends and our community can also compromise sensitive information. According to Carnegie Mellon researchers, information listed on social media may be enough to guess a social security number, the key to identity theft. And with mobile banking apps, more and more people are logging sensitive information from their smart phones. Add confusing Terms of Service agreements into the mix (they take an average of 10 minutes each to read!), and it’s easy to see why online privacy can feel mystifying.

  The following infographic helps explain some of the biggest issues in web safety and gives tips on how to keep yourself protected, from passwords to privacy policies. With a few steps, you can be confident that you control what you share online.
