In preparation for CES, Broadcom today unveiled their first new chips adhering to the fifth-generation 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard. According to Broadcom, the new 802.11ac chips are three times faster and up to six times more power efficient than equivalent current 802.11n chipsets. The new fifth generation chips utilize 80 MHz channel bandwidth two times wider than current 802.11n solutions while using a 256-QAM modulation scheme that should increase data transfer efficiency. In layman terms, Broadcom argues this means a product specifically tailored to in-home video, delivering speeds up to 1.3 gigabits per second with better range. You should start seeing the chipsets pop up starting in the second quarter of this year.
